Clearing Up a Misconception

Email Frustrations

Here's the skinny: I've been receiving masses of emails asking specific questions about what to do in the game. People must think I sit around playing the SP episode over and over, twenty-four/seven. Well, truth is I don't play much beside Quake 1 and 2. Another problem is I get emails asking for answers that are already in the walkthrough. I take time to do these walkthroughs and Find It!s to answer those questions, so please read the COMPLETE walkthrough, or at least SEARCH it for what your questions concern. If it isn't in the walkthrough, which is very unlikely, I will reply. If it just requires looking closer at what's there, I won't reply. I'm sorry, but I'm much too busy to rerun through the game a dozen times a day to find answers to walkthru-related questions. I'm not pissed, but I needed to make this clear. 8-Q

5 Assed Monkey...the Site

Nice Site

5AssedMonkey.com is a site for Multiplayer Heretic 2, as well as Quake 3 Test and Quake 2 and Tribes. Local files for download, a great links page, local servers, and one of the best South Park Web Names I've yet seen (though the name seems to be the only relation to SP). Have a look-see... 8-Q

EP Finally Released!

Get it NOW:

Okay, it's here! The great EP we've all been waiting for has arrived. Get it at Heretic II.com. What's in it? Well, many fixes, for one, including "The Slow-walking bug." That will be a relief for many, I know, including myself. For a complete list of the enhancements and bug-fixes, look here. Now get to downloading! Remember, all past saved games become unplayable after you apply the patch...so be warned. NOTE: Also, it's a good idea to uninstall Heretic II (use the provided Uninstaller), then reboot, reinstall, apply the patch/EP, then apply the DM maps pack. Otherwise, you could have problems (as I did). 8-Q

Newer A3d Drivers, In the Mailbag

A3d 2.05:

New A3d drivers on the files page. Same instructions as below (read em!) Meanwhile I'll open my mailbag and just provide some of the answers, both funny and informative, to some of the questions I've gotten. I always enjoy the mail, maybe you'll understand why after reading this. Remember, these are just the answers, so you'll just have to infer the questions...

No, Corvus doesn't have a sword, those are just bows he wears on his back, and those early screenshots must have been wishful thinking or a chucked weapon.

I don't know how tall he is.

No, he's not Mister Spock. Um, do you read anything that comes with your games?

Yes, it seems running H2 on the very minimal PC requirements will slow Corvus down and limit his movement. No, I don't know why except for the obvious reason. And yes H2 works tons better with a 3D card.

To make Corvus run, you have to press down and HOLD the run key. Otherwise he always walks or runs in spurts. There is a bind for always run, but I don't advise it. This isn't Quake or Hexen 2. Corvus needs to walk and run at times, and his other movements are based within these two basics, so always running would cut off half his "style".

No, you cannot go all the places shown on the Loading... Map. It's called "fantasy".

No, I don't know Raven personally. But I have ways of getting inside info if I need it, through my faithful friend and webgod, Phoebus. But please don't start sending him my mail, he's busy enough and will forward it to me anyway.

No, I'm not involved in developing the EP. I'm waiting anxiously like the rest of you.

Hope that clears up a few things and got a chuckle. Keep em coming! 8-Q

Prepping for the EP

A3d 2.0 drivers:

Getting ready for that EP? I am. I just found 2.0 version A3d drivers that should work with most A3d cards. It's on the files page, unzip into C:\windows\system. If your manufacturer drivers are 2.0 compatible, you're already set, so don't confuse your PC by installing these. BTW I have a Dell Dimension XPS-R350 with Turtle Beach Montego sound (not Montego II, but there are new drivers out for that card at the TB site.) I tried Heretic II under these drivers and they improve the stuttering bug, especially when you preemptively exit one of the in-game videos. Have fun! 8-Q

Big FAQ

The Crumbling Roof Room Jump:

3:30 PM CST: Okay I know how to play the demo now, so it's on the Files Page. To play it, put it in your (already existent) C:\Program Files\HereticII\Base\Demos\ directory, then run the game and bring down the console (~) and type DEMOMAP JUMP.HD2 and watch.

I've been getting a few dozen emails about this jump in the Andoria Slums where the roof breaks out. I have no problem at all making this jump and have been wondering what the problem is. One solution may be that in order for Corvus to climb, you must jump and press the forward key, holding it down when he hits the ledge to make him grab hold. But it's hard to believe you'd get this far in the game without learning that maneuver, so I'm suspecting some of you are experiencing what I know to be a slight bug. Sometimes, when you save frequently, Corvus begins to slow down noticeably. He runs at a pace that's closer to his normal walking speed when this bug occurs. I usually have to exit and restart the game to get it to speed up again. I imagine they've fixed this in the EP, VERY soon to be released I hear. Until then, check out my FAQ page on how to use the cheat KIWI (NOCLIP) to get Corvus up this ledge. I'll also soon put a demo on the Files page to show you how to jump if everything seems to be running normal, soon as I find out how to view recorded H2 demos (yes, I don't know!).

Here's today's news on the Enhancement Pack:

We're close enough that you all can start talking about the beta and the program.

Another Enhancement Pack Update

Here's the skinny on the upcoming PHAT EP:

On the Heretic II Enhancement Pack front, I am very pleased to report that we are "close" to releasing this bad boy. It is in the final stages of QA at Activision right now and I just gave a detailed feature list to the guys and gals out in LA. The list has dozens of new features and enhancements and I think that you will find that it's well worth the wait. I'll give you a taste of what's included in the EP and we'll provide a full feature list later:

1. Eight new DM maps from Raven's top designers
2. The new female player model...Kiera!
3. Team Deathmatch support
4. All new Ultra-Hard Armageddon mode for single player
5. An all new shrine and all new defensive spell
6. Staff Only "bladematch" mode
7. A3D 2.0 and EAX Sound Support
8. New skins for Corvus and Kiera
9. Custom skin and model support
10. New ignore feature so players can ignore the chat messages sent by other online players

Interesting? This is only the tip of the iceberg. This EP is closer to a Mission Pack than anything else. It is a true enhancement of the Heretic II gameplay.

Enhancement Pack Imminent

Here's the latest on the EP, from Jake Simpson's .plan:

The EP is now in final QA.. we don't want any problems creeping up on us from behind over this, we want to get this right first time, like we did with the retail release. Add to this an OEM deal we are trying to produce at the same time, and mix in only three people on this and you have a recipe for lots of work and yet more late nights. I know our illustrious leader Pat Lipo has been flogging his guts out over this and us other two minions have been working pretty hard too. On the plus side though, what we've come up with is definitely an Enhancement Pack, and almost a mission pack. I wont go into all the enhancements right now, since it would take too long and I wouldn't remember them all anyway. Suffice to say, we are pretty happy with what we've accomplished, and the beta testers seem fairly happy too. At least thats what they say. :) 8-Q

NOT a Multiplayer Site

Blues' Mistake

Bluesnews did me the great service of mentioning my site on his much frequented and great game site, yet he mistakenly mentioned this site gives Multiplayer Tactics. I'm sorry to say that is not true and never will be. The Spirit Shrine is your definitive SINGLE PLAYER Heretic II source. Don't mean to kick myself in the teeth here, but I didn't want anyone being mislead. 8-Q

New Logo by Deprive!

Great Artwork

Deprive did me a great logo, as you can see. Now the site's truly official. Keep sending in those FAQs, and I'm still looking for a Single Player Strategy guide from anyone who would like to donate one to the site. I'll give you full credit, of course. I mean by Strats: Fighting techniques, cool jumps and manuevers, and unique advice on keeping yourself alive in the game. Now let's hear from some of you, cuz I can see by the hit counter that there's plenty of interest. BTW, thanks for stopping by. The site's zooming! 8-Q

Fun Shots

Harpies Like Head, Healer Bug

Check out this shot of what those Harpies can do if you lose your head...um, too late. And this is a bug I hope is fixed in the Enhancement Pack, where if you hit Escape during the Healer's movie, he appears in two places, as seen here. 8-Q
